Congratulations my precious friend and colleague Steven Hill, a champion of global peace and security!

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced the appointment of Steven Hill of the United States as the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs.

He is currently the Executive Secretary of the The International Institute for Justice and the Rule of Law (IIJ), where I serve on the advisory board. A brilliant leader, Steven brings over two decades of experience working on international legal issues in multilateral organizations, national government and in academia. Steven previously held the position of Legal Adviser and Director of the Office of Legal Affairs at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) (2014-2020). He served as a career official at the United States National Security Council (2021-2022) and in the Office of the Legal Adviser at the United States Department of State (2001-2008). He was also the Deputy Legal Adviser at the United States Mission to the United Nations (2011-2014). Steven has taught international law at academic institutions in China, Europe and the United States.

With a Juris Doctor degree from Yale Law School, Connecticut, USA, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard College, Massachusetts, USA, he is destined to hold even higher appointments.
